It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend, beloved teacher, mentor, and 2017 La Voix Studio Golden Icon Award Honoree, James "Jim" Gilstrap, who passed away peacefully on Saturday.

Jim was more than a legendary vocalist. He was family. His kindness, humility, generosity, and unwavering support of La Voix Studio touched every student, teacher, and staff member who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing leaves an immeasurable void in our hearts, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of musicians.

Born in Pittsburg, Texas, Jim proudly served his country in the Vietnam War before pursuing a remarkable career in music. With a portfolio representing well over 100 million albums sold, he became one of the most sought-after session singers in the recording industry. Throughout his extraordinary career, Jim lent his unmistakable voice to some of the greatest artists of all time, including Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Quincy Jones, Rod Stewart, Patti Austin, Dolly Parton, Adele, James Taylor, Katy Perry, John Legend, Common, and countless others.

Many recognize Jim as the voice singing the opening lines of Stevie Wonder's timeless classic "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," as co-lead vocalist on the iconic Good Times television theme song, and for his international hit "Swing Your Daddy." His voice can also be heard on legendary recordings including Talking Book, Innervisions, Grease, The Matrix, Rocky, and many award-winning albums, films, television shows, and performances spanning more than five decades.

While his professional accomplishments were extraordinary, what made Jim truly special was his heart for teaching. At La Voix Studio, he shared his extensive knowledge of music theory, sight reading, sight singing, vocal technique, and musicianship with incredible patience and passion. He believed that every student deserved encouragement, excellence, and the confidence to pursue their dreams. Whether teaching a beginner or mentoring an accomplished performer, Jim always gave his time generously and made everyone feel valued.

In recognition of his remarkable contributions to music and his dedication to inspiring future generations, La Voix Studio proudly honored Jim with the 2017 Golden Icon Award. It was a celebration not only of his legendary career but of the incredible man behind the music.

Jim was one of La Voix Studio's biggest supporters. He championed our mission, celebrated our students, participated in our events, and continuously encouraged us to dream bigger. His friendship meant the world to us, and we are forever grateful that he chose to share his gifts, wisdom, and love with our studio family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Gloria, his family, friends, and everyone whose lives were touched by this extraordinary man.

Thank you, Jim, for the music, the lessons, the laughter, the encouragement, and the countless memories. Thank you for believing in us, investing in our students, and reminding us that true greatness is measured not only by talent, but by generosity, humility, and love.

Your voice will live on in the songs you sang, the students you inspired, and the hearts of all who knew you.

During a recent visit to Washington, DC, members of the La Voix Studio family had the opportunity to explore the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a remarkable destination dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories, achievements, and cultural contributions of African Americans throughout history.

Among the museum’s incredible exhibits are highlights honoring legendary artists who helped shape the sound of generations, including The Supremes and Freda Payne’s iconic album, Band of Gold. Seeing these accomplishments recognized and preserved in such an important institution was an unforgettable moment and a powerful reminder of the lasting impact music can have.

We are especially proud to celebrate Freda and Scherrie Payne's legacy and the influence of the Payne family, whose contributions continue to inspire artists and music lovers around the world. These moments remind us why preserving, sharing, and celebrating the arts remains at the heart of what we do at La Voix Studio.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Grammy Award–winning engineer and beloved member of our La Voix family, Reggie Dozier. Reggie was not only a part of our music community, but truly a part of our personal family as well.
Reggie made a remarkable and lasting impact on the world of music. As one of the foundational architects of modern commercial recording methods in the United States, his work shaped the sound of countless artists. His engineering on Outkast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below earned him the 2004 Grammy Award for Outstanding Engineering. He also engineered the soundtrack for Universal Pictures’ Endless Love, including the iconic Diana Ross and Lionel Richie duet that reached #1 on the Billboard charts and became the best-selling single of 1981.
But beyond his historic accomplishments, Reggie’s heart, generosity, and mentorship made him unforgettable. He was a true mentor to many of our students at La Voix Studio—always sharing his time, wisdom, and kindness. He believed deeply in our mission of music education, helping students master their craft, and giving back to the next generation of artists. He uplifted so many by encouraging them to continue their musical journeys.
One of our most cherished memories with Reggie was honoring him as our 2018 Golden Icon Award Honoree, a celebration that perfectly reflected his artistry, spirit, and influence. His presence at that event—not just as an honoree, but as a friend—will forever be remembered with warmth and gratitude.

HBO is seeking talent for a new talent showcase and would like to extend an invitation to anyone that is at least 14 years of age to audition.

They will be filming in Los Angeles this Summer and Fall.

The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) Performing Arts Division (PERF), in collaboration with Los Angeles Dance Worker Coalition (LADWC), is excited to announce an open call for dance on-film submissions. Selected video artists and choreographers will be commissioned to create new works for Dance in the City 2024 to be presented at the Lankershim Arts Center in North Hollywood in October 2024.

DCA invites emerging artists focused on dance on film exploration, to apply for the opportunity to create video works influenced or inspired by the 1950s and 1960s gimmick thriller films of William Castle, as part of a larger program scheduled for the middle of October: LankerSCREAM Spooky Show.

The deadline to apply is Sunday, July 28, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Please submit applications via email to [email protected] with “Dance in the City 2024” as the subject line.
